EAST SIDE GALLERY & MARKTHALLES 9

Dear Caroline,

These are my last few days in Berlin. I cannot believe 6 weeks went by so fast. Rough beginning but nice ending. I had three things left on my list to do: the East Side Gallery, Markthalles 9, and Always Together Cafe.

Emilie and I both had morning classes so we thought we finish up the list. The plan was just to do Markthalles 9 but that didn’t start till 5pm and it was still afternoon. Emilie had the great idea of walking the East Gallery. Two birds, one stone.

The east side gallery is the biggest outdoor gallery in the world. So many artists worked on the project. It’s a great way to repurpose something ugly into something beautiful and also in remembrance. The most famous piece is the Kiss. Everyone is there taking photos, it’s quite the commotion.

Finally time for the market. Every Thursday Markthalles 9 hosts a street food market. It has a wild array of cuisines from all over the world. We saw a bender selling bao and other soup dumplings, we saw some arepas, tacos, Chinese crepes, French crepes, a pasta bar, Turkish manti stall, and so much more. It was so hard to choose. I ended up playing it safe and getting a tarteflammbée. It was much better than the one at the bar. Thin and crispy, just how I like it.

After our street food Emilie and I were craving ice cream. On our walk of the market we saw a stall with what we thought was I’ve cream. But upon closer inspection we realized it was kochi ice cream. We wanted something a bit more traditional, and we decided to make the trip to Always together Cafe for some Korean shaved ice.

What a great decision that was. We both got the Oreo, and it satisfied our sweet craving perfectly. It was shaved ice with sweetened condensed milk and a whole wonder of toppings. There were brownies and Oreos in it. I would 100% have it again. It was refreshing and sweet, but not too sweet and just wonderful over all.

Finally our day had to come to an end. Two more days in Berlin.
